Optimizing your Website for Mobile Search

October 27th, 2011 posted by admin

Over the last couple of years one of the new ways to market not only businesses but also website is through mobile search. This new medium operates in a similar way to doing searches on your desktop, laptop, or tablet pc. You simple access a search engine and type in you keywords and all this via your phone. For websites to appear in the search results when a mobile search is done they must be optimized for this.

So if your current office cleaning services website is relatively simple and multimedia-free, you can easily optimize it for mobile search. First, remove any Flash elements. Flash can’t be loaded in some mobile browsers, plus it takes up a lot of bandwidth.

Also, make your landing page clean and simple. Remove unnecessary images, and use text links instead of buttons (which are images).

If your website uses CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) externalize them.

Create a sitemap and run your site through a W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) validity checker to ensure it is compliant with W3C standards.

As to the code underlying your website, XHTML is a more mobile-friendly markup language than HTML, but for a mobile site built from scratch, WML (Wireless Markup Language) might be best.

Another thing you should do to make sure your website is optimized for mobile devices is test your site on different mobile web browsers. Your site should look the same across different devices, and should load relatively quickly. Fewer pictures and image elements should help with the loading time. Navigation should be simple, with clickable action elements clearly indicated and spaced.

Remember the limitations of the mobile browsing experience when optimizing your site. Screen sizes are smaller and bandwidth is slower. The touchscreen interaction method is also different from how you interact with a personal computer. Given all of the above, keeping your mobile site as simple as possible is absolutely vital.
