An exercise in passion

You often read about companies making it big in the financial sector. Firms that begin small and end up in a position where they can generate lots of money at the click of a button – something all of us would like to be able to do but only a few of us know how to capitalise on.

But what we don’t hear about so often are small businesses which are highly unusual and groundbreaking in their own right. The following example demonstrates just that.

Rings on Wings was developed by a friend of mine who used to work in the business of shredding documents. She was happy enough with her job – which also involved disaster recovery for clients who needed their web-sites up and running in the event of an emergency – but her real passion was and is Barn Owls. So she looked into setting up a business of her own, with her partner; one which would allow her to spend more time with her birds, and which would also allow her to build a successful business model.

My friend received a decent pay out for the company, and now runs an…

Soon she was onto a good thing – a friend of hers who worked in SEO and internet marketing said that she would help her do this, if she (my friend) could organise a Barn Owl to fly the ring to her on her wedding day. My friend arranged this, and the rest is history. It turned out that SEO would play an important part.

Now she had a web-site up and was regularly getting hits on it, she decided to start advertising and putting photos up. By this point she had photos and video of events she had attended with her Owls for free, and this attracted more customers. Soon, she was taking down dates and booking them into a busy looking diary that was rapidly filling up.

The company went on to turn over $45,000 a year. Not a huge amount by any stretch of the imagination, but enough for my friend and her partner to easily survive on. Three years later, thanks to a great SEO ranking, the couple sold the company name to a larger firm who had more manpower and wanted to expand further. My friend received a decent pay out for the company, and now runs an Owl sanctuary which is doing really well. And that’s how things can happen, if you know where to begin and you have the right contacts.

Of course, it isn’t always so simple; sometimes people don’t have contacts in SEO and don’t have a clue where to begin. But, with internet marketing increasingly available to the man or woman on the street, all that is changing. Now we can all be masters of our own destinies, which is the way it should always have been.
