Why The Subject Line is Important In Email Marketing

When you send your newsletters out, there is only one result you want: the recipient should open it. Seems simple, but most e-mail marketing newsletters go unopened and ignored. This is mostly due to the choice of subject line. Although most people ignore the importance of a good subject line, the benefits of taking the time to create the perfect one is the key to success.

There are a few rules that you should follow when sending a mass e-mail from a mailing list:

1) The old adage “Keep it Simple Stupid” should not be forgotten with your subject line. Be sure to make it short and concise. Your subject line should show exactly what your newsletter is offering. Most research points to less than 50 characters for a subject line as being most effective. Anything longer and your recipient will likely become disinterested.

2) Personalize the e-mail. Studies have shown that the deciding factor for opening an e-mail is the recipient’s relationship to the sender. Try adding the customer’s name in the subject line. This will give the impression that you are sending the message directly to them and only for them. People like to feel special.

3) There are certain words that must be avoided when it comes to subject lines. Everyone is aware of “FREE” which is usually spotted and eliminated by spam guards. But there are other words that sneak past spam protection but do not pass the cunning eyes of your customers. These are “HELP”, “REMINDER”, and “PERCENT OFF”, all of which will seem suspect to your targeted customers.

Your subject line should be treated with as much importance as the content of your e-mail. Do not ignore this importance, for if you put in the time, effort, and money into creating a mailing list and newsletters, it is all for nothing if the recipients do not open it.
