Do not hire friends and family for your business

With the poor shape of the economy running a small business is becoming more and more difficult. There are many people that are not able to find jobs. You may be tempted to help out a family member or a friend by giving them a job. This is never a good idea. You do not ever want to hire someone that you have any form of relationship with.

When you have a business you will need employees. You want people to work for you that you do not have any kind of association with outside of work. There are many reasons why you would not want to hire family or friends. You need to be able to rely on the fact that the people that work for you will try their hardest. Friends and family may feel as though they do not need to work as hard because they know you and think that you will cut them some slack. They will be quicker to talk back to you when corrected then someone who does not have a relationship with you. If they continuously do not meet expectations it may get to the point that you will have to terminate them from their position.

This could become a very difficult situation if this is a family member or friend. It could cause a fight and make you lose a friendship that you once cherished. If you have someone that is family or a friend working for you and you reward them for great work you will be criticized as showing favoritism with them from the other employees. There is no winning situation when having family or friends as employees. To be safe make sure that you hire qualified employees that have no relation to you. You want to be able to correct people and reward people. Keep your friends and family separate from your business.

Not to mention, the last thing that you want to talk about on your next three valleys ski vacation is work. And if your family and friends are all employees, the likelyhood is that this is what you will be talking about!
