I have started, built up and sold a number of businesses over the last thirty years across a multitude of different unconnected industrial and commercial sectors including: Home Improvements, Financial Services, Property, Web Development, and primarily… delivering energy management solutions through various distribution channels including the Enigin Partner development program. However the fundamental principles, the critical success factors, the blueprints, the foundations stones, call them what you like… that have proven so many times to consistently work are in fact constant!
…Therefore… they can be easily replicated…
Speaking frankly - if you want to succeed whether that is as a property developer or as an Enigin partner, it is vital you realize that success in today’s world has nothing to do with ‘luck’. Business life is not a game of chance over which we are subject to the winds of change.

The very meaning of the word ‘entrepreneur is: ‘someone who takes full responsibility and accountability for the success and/or failure of a venture’ – I find it truly liberating to appreciate that more that anyone else I am responsible for the position I am in (good or bad), and nobody else… It is equally true for you!

At the same time it is helpful to recognise that invariably our success is capped well below our true potential - we limit our potential because of our own disempowering, limiting beliefs, which can be deeply engrained. We have to work aggressively, and get tough with ourselves to remove any negative paradigms. You can learn these things in the field, on training courses, or companies like Enigin will teach them to you in order to make you and thus them successful.

In a physical context our bodies are made up of what we eat. So too our motivation and dominant inclinations, which affect our decisions every day, are a direct result of what we feed and focus our minds on and this can either be empowering or dispiriting. Top sports athletes believe that once they are in peak physical condition 70 to 90 % of the outcome is based on psychological factors.

I recently read a book that made a very profound statement; - “You will be the same person in five years time that you are today except for what you read (or watch I guess) and the people you choose to associate with”.

Your attitude is constantly being shaped, for better or for worse, and yet more than any other single factor in your life, business, personal, financial… you attitude got you where you are now and will determine where you will be five years from now.

Remember it is YOUR ATTITUDE more than any other single factor that will determine how successful you are in your new business.

Before we get into the mechanics of starting your new business let’s consider five laws of motivation that have proved invaluable both to me and to the key players in the various business I own, these are laws that will impel us to accelerate beyond our limiting beliefs and create a new and empowering self-image…

Firstly you must: RELISH CHANGE.

Everything around us is growing through a process of constant change… nothing remains the same in fact the only thing that is constant is change for some change can create uncertainty but it is essential for growth it is the very essence of life!

Always look for the good – don’t complain that rose bushes have thorns, thank God the thorn bushes have roses. As you continue to grow, develop a healthy attitude toward your own mistakes - these are valuable learning experiences. Remember that problems and progress go together – the only people with NO problems – are dead! So embrace change with each new day of life…

Secondly to have a sense of purpose and pursue it with passion you must: CULTIVATE BELIEF.

Develop a supreme confidence in yourself… it’s our beliefs and expectations that determine outcome. Create a positive self-image that you can believe in – the sort of person you would really like to be. When faced with important decisions ask yourself “If I were that person what would I do?” The rule is ‘fake it till’ you make it’.

We live in a world where success is unusual – if we want to produce unusual results we sometimes have to do unusual things. If we are prepared to settle for second best that’s what we will always have. Belief is the very substance that has empowered world conquers.

Equally important is to have: A SENSE OF VISION.

By using our creative imagination we can actually see, taste and feel a successful outcome well before the event has occurred – this can be an incredibly empowering force. Goals generate passion, they inspire, energise and motivate. Every sport and every game played has goals, without them it would be meaningless. Man is an automatic goal seeking mechanism that must be loaded and aimed at a specific target… make sure you have something to aim for! A clearly defined goal is so powerful it can generate an unconquerable passion – so much so it becomes like a self-fullfilig prophecy.

However you must approach everything with: ENERGY & ENTHUSIASM.

We can learn so much about attitude by observing children… they have very few preconceptions they approach each day with renewed energy and enthusiasm. Childlike enthusiasm is infectious! Have the desire to get on with things… develop pace, tempo and move with a sense of purpose. Attach a degree of urgency to every project you work on and revel in the opportunity each day brings. When confronted with a problem do it now, when faced with an opportunity – seize it now. Procrastination is a thief of time – and life. It is one of the greatest enemies of success. Indeed, enthusiasm is a very powerful and motivating force…

However, its power can be diminished unless we: AVOID THE NEG!

Learn to cope with rejection and see it for what it is… remember people don’t kick a dead dog! Almost all the real champions in this world and the great leaders have had to cope with masses of rejection and negative feedback. No monument has ever been erected to a critic. On the contrary, monuments are erected to those people who were told it can’t be done but then in spite of that they simply went out and DID IT!

Don’t let people supplant their disempowering beliefs on you. We must take ultimate responsibility for who and what we are now and for what we become in the future. It is not what we do occasionally that ultimately determines who or what we become – rather it’s what we do consistently. We make decisions each day about what and how we feed our minds and body on – and in these simple choices our destiny is shaped.
